Prior to introducing our Custom Extension to the market place we performed extensive research. We not only wanted to design a luxurious, glossy, natural-looking extension, but, also to design a highly functional extension to move as one with the horse’s natural tail. We accomplished our goals by developing and patenting a design element which is at the core of each Spicy Tail Extension. We refer to this design element as the “Material Spine®”. The “Material Spine®” is the secret behind a natural looking and natural moving extension. The “Material Spine®” mimics the horse’s natural tail bone structure and hair growth patterns. The Extension is small at the top to fit snug against the tail bone under a tight braid, sewn in overlapping layers achieving the greatest hair weight at the bottom of the Extension. The Extension is highly flexible and holds in place on the flat and over jumps.

Each Spicy Tail Extension is ultimately like a fingerprint, no two are alike. Each Extension is individually custom made and hand blended using only the finest materials to withstand the rigors of showing. #1 Problem: The tail extension separates from the natural tail and wraps around the horse’s hocks and hind legs.
Solution: Spicy Tail’s Material Spine® is essentially an extension of the horse’s natural tail bone. The layers of hair sewn to the Material Spine® mimic the natural structure of a horse’s tail where layers overlap each other achieving the greatest hair weight at the bottom of the tail extension. This structure provides natural, fluid, unified movement, a high degree of flexibility and a low center of gravity to keep the extension in place on the flat and over jumps. No more embarrassing tail separation in the show ring!

#2 Problem: The extension has a large, hard “knob” at the top of the extension that can’t be hidden under the tail braid.
Solution: The Spicy Tails Custom Hunter Extension is designed with a small, flat top. The design enables the extension to fit snuggly against the horse’s natural tail bone, making the extension undetectable under the tail braid and move as one with the horse’s natural tail.

#3 Problem: The bulky and hard extension top rubs raw spots on the horse’s tail bone.
Solution: The top of the Spicy Tails Extension is notably softer and far less bulky than the competitors. Spicy Tails are designed to fit against the tail bone to reduce unwanted motion and rubbing. Further the Extension gradually widens until the hair on the Extension reaches its widest point and heaviest weight at the bottom, helping to further anchor the hair down and reduce excessive motion.

#4 Problem: The extension falls apart after one show season.
Solution: Spicy Tails’ Extensions are meticulously designed and sewn in layers using high grade thread and materials built to stand the rigors of showing. Careful use of high quality turnout products, such as Lucky Braids All In One Shampoo and Whitening Spray, along with proper storage will extend the life of the Extension considerably.

#5 Problem: The extension does not blend well with my horse’s tail or look natural.
Solution: The Spicy Tails Custom Hunter Extension is hand blended layer by layer to mimic each horse’s unique tail color pattern. This is how we are able to achieve a realistic, natural looking extension. Since the Extension is fitted in the center of the horse’s natural tail, the hair for the Extension is carefully selected and blended strand by strand to match the unique color patterns present in the center of the horse’s tail.

TIP: Most horse owners are focused on picking the perfect length, weight, and color for a custom extension without fully considering how the horse’s natural tail and the custom extension will blend! Pay attention to the ends of the horse’s tail as well. To make the natural tail and the Extension appear as one, trim or prepare the two “tails” identically. For example, if the horse’s natural tail is tapered and/or light on the ends, make sure the custom Extension is also tapered in the same fashion and lighter on the ends. We are specialists, a Spicy Tails Extension can be made in any length, any weight, and any color combination from the top of the Extension to the ends. The secret to truly enhancing natural beauty is paying attention to the fine details.

#6 Problem: The extension is too short to fall at my horse’s fetlocks.
Solution: The Spicy Tails Hunter Extension is on average 42 inches long which is 6 inches longer than most others. Our Extension fits the average Warmblood and Thoroughbred horse and can be trimmed to a custom length if necessary. Like a natural tail, the Extension can be tapered or banged at the bottom which ever suits your riding discipline or taste. Additionally our Extension can be made in custom lengths from pony to draft horse length.

Spicy Tails emphasizes and specializes in mobile services because we realize trainers and exhibitors are pressed for time and want that “perfect” extension match for their horses quickly. At horse shows Spicy Tails is mobile and makes rounds to the barn aisles bringing our products to the consumer. This enables the trainer and their clients to focus on the most valuable activities — preparing riders and horses for competition! In the Northern California Sacramento Region we also provide the service of”in person” visits. For appointments in the Sacramento region we charge a $25 per horse fee plus a travel fee which can range from $65 to $100 depending on the distance from Sacramento. END OF SHOW SEASON CLEANING SERVICES
At the end of the horse show season you can mail your Spicy Tail Custom Hunter Extension in for general cleaning and repair so the extension will be in top condition for the start of the new season. Mail the extension(s) to: Spicy Tails, 2545 Countryside Drive, Placerville, CA. 95667. There is a $55 fee for this service for normal wear and tear. If the extension requires extensive cleaning and repair, the fee will be higher depending on the circumstances. You can pay for this service by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discovery) or include a check with the extension. The service fee includes return shipping.
